When you hear the term “anemia”, you probably immediately picture either a vitamin-mineral supplement or a nice, juicy steak in your mind, if you picture anything at all. Many people don’t know that the second most common form of anemia is caused by the inflammation that arises from a variety of chronic diseases. No vitamins or minerals will correct the low level of red blood cells in this form of anemia, and heavy doses of unnecessary nutrients can be quite dangerous. The good news is that, in most cases, treating the underlying disease will correct the anemia.
Use this handout to learn more about this underdiagnosed and undertreated form of anemia, also known as anemia of inflammation, including symptoms, treatment, and more.
