It is my understanding that pumpkin spice is not such a big deal in some parts of the country, but here in the Midwest, it is a big, big deal. Starbucks released the Pumpkin Spice Latte on August 27ththis year. It was 83 degrees here on that day, and cars were wrapped around the building.
If you don’t believe me that an obsession with all things pumpkin spice is very much alive – please understand that Spam canned meat will be available in Pumpkin Spice flavor this year.
You will likely be pretty shocked by some of the items on the Pumpkin Spice – Not So Nice handout that I’ve created. For example, a Steak ‘n’ Shake Pumpkin Spice Milkshake contains 100 grams of sugar. Keep in mind that men should eat no more than 37.5 grams of added sugar each day, while women should limit themselves to 25 grams. Consider also that a Dairy Queen Pumpkin Pie Blizzard (and this is medium size) contains 769 calories while most adults need around 1400-1800 calories per day total.
There are many ways to get your pumpkin fix without completely wrecking your diet, however. A few of the “better for you” options include:

Caramel Almond Pumpkin Spice KIND Nut Bars – each bar is 219 calories and 5 grams of sugar

Einstein Bros Pumpkin Bagel– enjoy this for only 250 kcals and 7 grams of sugar
Vitalicious Pumpkin Spice Vita Tops– a satisfying sweet that will only cost you 100 calories and 8 grams of sugar
Pumpkin Spice Cheerios– a ¾ cup of this cereal contains 110 calories and 8 grams of sugar
Pumpkin Flax Kodiak Energy Cakes– make these on a chilly morning to warm up with only 190 calories and 10 grams of sugar in a ½ cup of the dry mix
Nature’s Bakery Stone Ground Whole Wheat Fig Bar, Pumpkin Spice – if you can limit yourself to only one cookie, go ahead and indulge for 110 calories and 10 grams of sugar
